Florence Police Officer Involved Shots Fired

At approximately 1:30p on 10-08-14 the Florence Police Department received a 911 call regarding a man with a gun in the area of Florence Fire Station #4 on Huntsville Road. The caller advised that a male with a straw hat and red shirt had approached his family in their vehicle and was acting erratic and pointed a rifle at his family. Florence officers responded to the scene and located the male in the 300 block of North Eclipse Street. The attached raw video was captured by the in car video systems of responding officers. Two shots were fired by a Florence Police Officer. Both of those rounds struck the pavement behind the suspect and no bystanders were injured during the encounter. The suspect was later determined to have a long cane wrapped in clothing, as shown in the video. The suspect was not struck by the rounds fired by the officer and was transported to a local medical facility for health/mental evaluation.
